The result is a perfectly uniform surface, with no grain or knots, with a depth of colour that natural wood does not give.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Four versions:<\/strong> matt, gloss, metallic and brushed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the palettes of our houses:<\/strong> 317 matt shades from 7 houses, 80 gloss, 32 metallic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quality is judged in the construction:<\/strong> how many coats, on how many sides, over which substrate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What exactly is lacquer?<\/h2>\n<p>When we say \u00ablacquer\u00bb, we do not mean a material but a <strong>finishing technique<\/strong>. The most common base is <strong>MDF<\/strong>, a dense, stable wood panel that takes colour perfectly. But solid wood is lacquered too: <strong>Solid Wood<\/strong>: Callesella paints solid fir in its country ranges, Sira solid ash, and Scandola applies the lacquer directly onto solid fir. We explain the difference between the two bases in the article <a href=\"\/en\/mdf-i-masif\/\">MDF or solid wood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the base the lacquer is \u00abbuilt up\u00bb in layers: first primer to \u00abclose\u00bb the surface, then the colour in one or more passes, and finally the protective varnish. Each layer is baked before the next is applied, so that the final result is hard, stable and perfectly smooth. The numbers are the shades offered by the houses we curate, counted house by house.<\/p>\n<h3>Matt lacquer<\/h3>\n<p>The most understated and the most widespread: <strong>317 shades from 7 houses<\/strong>. It absorbs light, hides fingerprints far more effectively, and in modern soft-touch versions has an almost velvety feel. In <a href=\"\/en\/gentili-time-white-matt-lacquer-hpl-kitchen-glyfada\/\">Glyfada<\/a> we designed a Gentili Time kitchen in matt lacquer \u00abBianco Gesso\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h3>Gloss lacquer<\/h3>\n<p><strong>80 shades from 5 houses.<\/strong> It reflects light, adds brightness and visually \u00abenlarges\u00bb the space, which is why we usually recommend it for a small or interior kitchen. It needs slightly more regular cleaning. In <a href=\"\/en\/febal-origina-avorio-gloss-hpl-kitchen-ilioupoli\/\">Ilioupoli<\/a> we chose gloss lacquer Febal Origina in Avorio. Pedini has four distinct systems: <strong>Ossidato, Hybrid, Anodyc and Anticato<\/strong>. We recommend it for an island or a tall composition, not for the whole kitchen.<\/p>\n<h3>Brushed lacquer<\/h3>\n<p>The lacquer is brushed so that the texture of the wood shows slightly beneath the colour. It gives a handcrafted character and suits classic and country compositions. Callesella has <strong>51 shades<\/strong> of brushed lacquer. The difference between a lacquer that lasts and one that does not does not show in the photograph, it shows in the construction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Coats of paint.<\/strong> On Pedini gloss finishes the door is sanded and <strong>six coats of lacquer per side<\/strong>. Febal starts with closed-pore preparation and finishes with a polyurethane or acrylic top varnish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Painted on all sides.<\/strong> The GF Interiors lacquered door is painted <strong>on all six sides<\/strong>, with a 2 mm ABS edge. In cheap constructions only the front is painted, and the edges are the first place to fail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polyurethane paint.<\/strong> Harder and more resistant to yellowing than ordinary paints, the standard in the Italian factories we work with.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water-based varnishes.<\/strong> Scandola paints with eco-friendly water-based varnishes, and Callesella states \u00abwater-based varnishes only\u00bb on its solid-wood ranges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low-formaldehyde substrate,<\/strong> class E1, in the composite materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An example of lacquer over solid wood: at <a href=\"\/en\/scandola-margot-grigio-londra-kitchen-nea-ionia\/\">Nea Ionia<\/a> the Scandola Margot doors are in <strong>Grigio Londra matt lacquer on solid fir<\/strong>. The other half is the finish: the same shade looks completely different in matt and in gloss.<\/p>\n<h3>White lacquer<\/h3>\n<p>There is no single white. The houses have many whites with different undertones, from pure white to cream and ivory. In Glyfada we designed a Gentili Time kitchen in matt \u201cBianco Gesso\u201d, and in Ilioupoli a Febal Origina in gloss \u201cAvorio\u201d (ivory): two white kitchens, two completely different spaces.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Matt white:<\/strong> discreet, hides fingerprints, suits understated interiors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gloss white<\/strong> (many people also search for it as \u201cwhite gloss\u201d): bright, makes the space look bigger, needs more regular cleaning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>White changes with the light in the room, which is why the shade is judged on a physical sample, in your own light, and not from a photo. You will find more on when each option suits in the article <a href=\"\/en\/mat-i-gyalisteri-kouzina\/\">matt or glossy kitchen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Black and dark lacquer<\/h3>\n<p>In a matt finish, black lacquer gives depth and elegance without reflecting. In gloss it shows dust and fingerprints more, like any dark reflective surface. In a small or dark space it is worth considering together whether the whole kitchen will be black or only part of it (island, tall unit) combined with a lighter surface.<\/p>\n<h3>Coloured lacquers<\/h3>\n<p>The houses\u2019 palettes do not stop at white and black: 317 matt and 80 gloss shades, such as the grey \u201cGrigio Londra\u201d we chose in Nea Ionia for Scandola Margot doors.
