What to choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"answer\">\n<h2>In short<\/h2>\n<p>Before we compare anything: <strong>MDF is not a finish, it is a substrate<\/strong>, the \u201cbase\u201d onto which lacquer or veneer is applied. The question \u201cMDF or solid wood?\u201d in practice compares a lacquered or veneered MDF door with a solid wood door. There is no \u201cbetter\u201d, there is a different logic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>MDF:<\/strong> a dense, stable fibreboard that takes lacquer perfectly, for a completely uniform surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solid wood:<\/strong> natural wood through the full thickness of the door, usually 24\u201326 mm in our ranges. Maximum warmth, repairable locally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Semi-solid:<\/strong> a solid wood frame with a veneered central panel, a lighter middle solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>MDF is not a finish, it is a substrate<\/h2>\n<p>The most common misconception is that \u201cMDF\u201d and \u201csolid wood\u201d describe the same thing: the final finish of the door. They do not. Solid wood is one material from start to finish. MDF is the construction base onto which is applied <strong>lacquer<\/strong> (a painted surface) or <strong>veneer<\/strong> (a thin sheet of natural wood). When we ask \u201cMDF or solid wood?\u201d, we are comparing two construction philosophies. You will find all the options, side by side, in the <a href=\"\/en\/ylika-kouzinas\/\">kitchen materials guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>MDF: stability and a perfectly uniform surface<\/h2>\n<p>MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is a dense, homogeneous board made of compressed wood fibres. Its density makes it very stable: it does not \u201cwork\u201d with the seasons the way natural wood does. That is why it takes lacquer perfectly, on a completely smooth surface with no knots, and why almost all modern lacquered kitchens are built on it.<\/p>\n<p>Quality is judged in the details. In <a href=\"\/en\/brands\/gentili-cucine\/kitchen\/time-collection\/\">Gentili Time<\/a> the smooth lacquered door is <strong>MDF lacquered on all six sides<\/strong>, with a 2 mm radius on the edges. In <a href=\"\/en\/brands\/gf-interiors\/kitchen\/flat\/\">GF Interiors Flat<\/a> the matt lacquer goes onto E1-class MDF, also painted on all six sides, and the <a href=\"\/en\/brands\/callesella\/kitchen\/atelier\/\">Callesella Atelier<\/a> lacquers <strong>22 mm E1-class MDF<\/strong>. Every door has its own grain, the wood darkens slightly and develops a patina over time, and a deep scratch <strong>is sanded down and refinished locally<\/strong>, because there is more wood underneath.<\/p>\n<p>In our collection, the fully solid wood models are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/brands\/sira-cucine\/kitchen\/eva\/\">Sira Eva<\/a>:<\/strong> 24 mm solid walnut, with an antique patina.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sira Vittoria:<\/strong> 24 mm solid chestnut.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/brands\/callesella\/kitchen\/fly\/\">Callesella Fly<\/a>:<\/strong> 2.6 cm fir, in flat modern panels.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/brands\/scandola-mobili\/kitchen\/tabia\/\">Scandola Tabi\u00e0<\/a>:<\/strong> 2.5 cm fir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two things we always say openly. First, a fully solid wood panel <strong>weighs noticeably more<\/strong> than a lacquered MDF one of the same dimensions and needs hinges of matching strength. Second, the carcass is judged separately from the door: in several models <strong>it is melamine even when the door is solid wood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"\/en\/callesella-fly-solid-fir-kitchen-cholargos\/\">Cholargos<\/a> we designed a Callesella Fly in solid three-ply fir, with flat panels and no knobs. In <a href=\"\/en\/kouzina-sira-eva-beige-antico-aigaleo\/\">Aigaleo<\/a>, a classic Sira Eva in solid wood with a hand-finished Beige Antico patina.<\/p>\n<h3>What is semi-solid wood?<\/h3>\n<p>Between the two approaches there is <strong>semi-solid<\/strong>: the door frame is solid wood, while the central panel is veneer. The line stays the same, the panel is lighter, and a scratch on the frame is repaired just as with solid wood. The <strong>Scandola<\/strong> lacquers directly onto <strong>solid fir<\/strong>, and Sira lacquers solid ash. The wood keeps its own texture beneath the colour. It does not warp and takes colour perfectly. The difference in quality shows in whether the door is painted on all sides and in the formaldehyde class (E1).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Does solid wood \u201ccrack\u201d or move over time?<\/summary>\n<p>Natural wood has small, normal expansions depending on humidity and temperature. That is why the classic door is made with a frame and panel: the central panel has room to move without stressing the finish.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>What is semi-solid wood?<\/summary>\n<p>A door with a solid wood frame and a veneer central panel: the same line as full solid wood, a lighter panel.
