How to choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"answer\">\n<h2>In short<\/h2>\n<p>There is no \u201cright\u201d choice between a matt and a glossy front. There is the choice that suits your own space, the light it has and the time you want to spend on cleaning. And something few people know: <strong>gloss is a matter of the lacquer<\/strong>. Fenix and bakelite from the houses we curate are matt.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Matt:<\/strong> hides fingerprints, discreet and contemporary, less day-to-day upkeep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glossy:<\/strong> bright, visually \u201cenlarges\u201d the space, needs more regular cleaning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the palettes of our houses:<\/strong> 317 matt lacquer shades from 7 houses, 80 glossy from 5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>It is not a material, it is a surface<\/h2>\n<p>A common misconception is that \u201cmatt\u201d and \u201cglossy\u201d are two different materials. They are not. They are two surface treatments, and the same kitchen model, in the same colour, feels radically different depending on which you choose. The <a href=\"\/en\/brands\/gf-interiors\/kitchen\/flat\/\">GF Interiors Flat<\/a>, for example, offers the same palette <strong>of 22 colours in both matt and glossy lacquer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a limit you should know from the start. Gloss lives in the <strong>lacquer<\/strong> and in glass. In the Febal, Gentili and Sira price lists <strong>there is no glossy laminate, glossy HPL or glossy Fenix<\/strong>, while glossy lacquer appears dozens of times. That is why the question \u201cmatt or glossy?\u201d always comes together with the choice of material, not after it.<\/p>\n<h2>How each finish behaves<\/h2>\n<p>The difference is simple: <strong>matt absorbs light, glossy reflects it<\/strong>. Everything else follows from this one difference.<\/p>\n<div class=\"split\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h3>Matt<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Absorbs light, does not reflect<\/li>\n<li>Hides fingerprints and marks far more effectively<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cvelvety\u201d feel, especially in the soft-touch versions<\/li>\n<li>The most widespread: the vast majority of the shades we offer are matt<\/li>\n<li>Less day-to-day upkeep<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h3>Gloss<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Reflects light, a bright presence<\/li>\n<li>Visually \u201cenlarges\u201d the space<\/li>\n<li>Depth of colour from many coats of lacquer<\/li>\n<li>Ideal for smaller or darker kitchens<\/li>\n<li>Shows fingerprints more, needs slightly more regular cleaning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The depth of glossy lacquer is no accident: on Pedini's glossy finishes the door is brushed and receives <strong>six coats of lacquer per side<\/strong>. At the other extreme, the <strong>Fenix<\/strong> is a new-generation ultra-matt laminate. In an already bright space matt gives a calmer picture, without tiring reflections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The size of the kitchen.<\/strong> In a small or interior kitchen we usually suggest glossy. In larger spaces matt can afford to be simply discreet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cleaning time.<\/strong> If you want less day-to-day care, matt is more \u201cforgiving\u201d. If you do not mind an extra pass of the cloth, the glossy surface rewards you visually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two kitchens we designed show the difference. In <a href=\"\/en\/gentili-time-white-matt-lacquer-hpl-kitchen-glyfada\/\">Glyfada<\/a> we chose <strong>Gentili Time \u201cBianco Gesso\u201d matt lacquer<\/strong> with slim black bar handles. A common solution is matt wall cabinets with a glossy island, so the island works as a focal point. Another is a matt kitchen body with glossy details on a shelf or a cladding panel, for a subtle contrast that does not \u201cshout\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The combination also works from room to room. It is not a matter of quality, it is a matter of slightly more regular cleaning, which most people consider a small trade-off for the brightness it offers.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Matt or glossy for a small kitchen?<\/summary>\n<p>In a small or interior kitchen we usually suggest glossy, because it reflects light and visually \u201copens up\u201d the space. With good lighting and a light palette, a matt kitchen can work equally well.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Is there glossy Fenix or glossy bakelite?<\/summary>\n<p>Not in the houses we curate. In the Febal, Gentili and Sira price lists there is no glossy laminate, HPL or Fenix. If you want gloss, the right conversation is about lacquer.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Does matt scratch more easily?<\/summary>\n<p>Not inherently. Scratch resistance depends mainly on the quality of construction, not on whether the surface is matt or glossy.
