Curved kitchen island: why the Pedini Arkè Shape does away with corners

In short: a curved kitchen island has no corners. Curves and organic forms make the space calmer, more sociable and easier to move through. The Pedini Arkè Shape is the answer we chose: base units, wall units and tall units with a curved body, in lacquer only, which we design with you for your own space.

For years, the island was a rectangular box in the middle of the kitchen. Useful, but the same in every home. Rounded islands, oval worktops and soft lines are part of a wider shift, which we describe in the kitchen trends for 2026. Here we look closely at a single idea: the curve. It is not a passing fashion. It is a different way of living in your kitchen. The kitchen has become the living room of the home: it is where we drink the first coffee, where the children do their homework, where friends end up. A space like that calls for forms that welcome, not corners that divide.

In our showroom in Neo Psychiko we see it every week: more and more clients ask for “something softer”, a kitchen that looks less like storage furniture and more like a piece of the home's architecture. In this article we explain what you gain with a curved island, how Pedini delivers it with the Arkè Shape, and when it suits your home.

Why the square island is giving way to the curve

The turn towards curves is not only about looks. It changes the way you move, the way you cook and the way people gather around the worktop.

What you gain with an island without corners

  • Flow of movement. Without sharp corners, moving around the island feels natural. The body follows the curve instead of turning around it.
  • Visual calm. Soft lines rest the eye. That is why curves are so often associated with warmth and serenity.
  • The space reads as more open. A rounded island does not “cut” the room in two. The open space feels more unified.
  • A kitchen people remember. Everyone has a rectangle. A curved island is the first thing anyone entering your home looks at.

Pedini Arkè Shape: the curve as the body of the unit

The Pedini is one of the Italian kitchen houses we curate. The Arkè Shape is the curved version of the Arkè series. Here the curve is not a decorative finish on the edge of the worktop. It is the body of the unit itself: curved base units, as well as curved wall units and tall units.

The Arkè Shape is available in lacquer only. The flat door comes in matt or MS, glossy or Polisoft, in cast-iron lacquer or metallic. The fluted door comes in matt or MS, in cast-iron lacquer or in metal-anodyc. If you want to see how lacquer compares with the other finishes, our guide to kitchen materials explains them one by one.

An S-shaped composition

In the composition you see in the photos, the island draws an S through the space. It is in matt Canapa 6401 lacquer with fluted doors. Beside it, a curved snack worktop in Rovere Carbone oak follows the curve, and the tall units in the background are in the same dark oak. From above, the design looks like a sculpture. Up close, the warm matt lacquer and the grain of the wood make the curve look even more pronounced.

Sculpted, not just designed

A straight door is the simplest part of a kitchen. A door that bends together with the island, with flutes that follow the curve without breaking, is another matter. In the Arkè Shape even the cabinet door curves. When you open it, the curve opens with it.

This detail sets a curved kitchen apart from a simple rounded edge. It demands precision in design and in installation, and that is why the curve goes into the plan from day one, not at the end.

The island becomes the heart of the gathering

On a rectangular island, someone always ends up in the corner. On a curved one, everyone sees everyone. The snack worktop that wraps around the curve becomes the place for the morning coffee and where every evening with friends ends up. Whoever is cooking does not turn their back on the company, they stand within it.

When a curved kitchen suits your home

  • In an open space. A curved island needs room around it to “breathe” and to be seen from every side.
  • When the kitchen is the centre of the home. If that is where you spend most of your time, the curve turns it into a meeting place.
  • When you want something nobody else has. A curve is designed for your space. It does not come out of a standard box.
  • In a renovation. Because the curve determines the flow of the whole space, it is the ideal moment to design it together with the other decisions.

How we design it with you

We design your kitchen with you, and often the whole home. With 30 years of experience in the Italian kitchen, we follow the same path on every project:

  • Visit at the showroom, one appointment at a time.
  • Design of the curve on the dimensions of your own space, in 3D.
  • Moodboard with lacquers, woods and textures, so you can see the result before you decide.
  • Quotation, installation and after-sales, with the same team from start to finish.

We have already designed the Arkè Shape for a client's home: see the Pedini Arkè Shape kitchen in glossy blue lacquer, with an island in white glass and a Corian worktop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pedini Arkè Shape?

It is the curved version of Pedini's Arkè series, with curved base units, wall units and tall units. It is available in lacquer only.

In which finishes is the fluted door of the Arkè Shape available?

In matt or MS, in cast-iron lacquer or in metal-anodyc.

Do I need a lot of space for a curved island?

A curved island shows to best advantage in an open space, with room around it. We design the dimensions and shape around your own space.

What is the difference between a curved island and an island with a rounded edge?

In an island with a rounded edge, only the finish curves. In the Arkè Shape the body of the unit itself curves, and with it the cabinet doors.
